The Incredible Body

The human body is always one of my favorite things to teach. I have taught it every year since college and it gets more fun each time! Over the past two weeks, we have discussed the heart, lungs, ribs, esophagus, intestines, stomach, and brain. Of course, that led to conversations about bones (mainly the skull), veins,  eyes and ears, exercising, eating nutritious foods and other healthy habits. Each day we discussed a different organ and glued it onto our "bodies."

When we discussed the digestive process, we also discussed healthy eating. Everyone created a plate of nutritious food and presented their meal to the class.

When we discussed the lungs, we also talked about how important exercise is for our bodies. We did some exercising and discovered how much faster our pulse was after we exercised.

Each day we glued on an organ onto our "bodies."

The finished product:

To end the unit, we went and saw  Bodyology with  Slim Goodbody! The kids had a fabulous time! Ali got called on stage to demonstrate her "marvelous muscles!"

Hip Hip Horray! It's the 100th day!

Wow! What an exciting day we have had celebrating the 100th day of school! It was so fun to be greeted by some very sweet 100 year olds. The students participated in many activities to celebrate the 100th day.

First, the students presented their 100th day collection. There were so many interesting things!

We made 100th day trail mix. Each student got ten pieces of ten ingredients and filled in a ten frame for each ingredient. It was delicious!

We traced our feet and found our "100th step" in the hallway.
We made a list of things we wish we had 100 of and things we would not want 100 of.

We participated in 100th day stations:
Build a 100 piece puzzle
Make a picture with the number 100
a chick
a lion
 best friends
a leopard, a water slide, and best friends
a flower, a fairy princess, and Fly Guy
 a monster truck
Paityn made me out of her 100! Do you see the resemblance?

Build a 100 Lego structure - a big "Thank You" to Mr. Foval for letting us borrow his Legos from 1995.

Make a portrait and write about yourself at 100
"When I am 100 I will be a police. I will fight crime and it will be fun."
"When I am 100 I will be nice and live in a hotel."
"When I am 100 I will be a man with 100 dollars."
"When I am 100 I will be slow as a turtle."
"When I am 100 I will be old and rich."
"When I am 100 I will be really awesome."
"When I am 100 I will be so old."
"When I am 100 I will be a rockstar."
"When I am 100 I will be very, very old."
"When I am 100 I will be a mom that stays home."
 "When I am 100 I will be a teacher."
"When I am 100 I will be very, very, very old and very tall."
"When I am 100 I will be very, very old and an old grampaw."
"When I am 100 I will be old and angry."
"When I am 100 I will be bald, toothless, old, and get a puppy."
"When I am 100 I will be an old man who has no glasses and no hair."
"When I am 100 I will be rich."
"When I am 100 I will be very nice and I will be old. I love glasses."

Build a 100 cup structure (the favorite station)
This was the tallest the tower got!
 Then it fell down!

Build something with 100 marshmallows

My favorite thing that we do every year is launch 100 balloons with all the first grade classes. It is so awesome to watch the kids get so excited! Each balloon has a tag on it asking that, if found to mail back to the school with a short note saying where it was found. We have had balloon tags found on the property of an couple in Mississippi and by a elementary student who was hunting in North Louisiana.

We ended the day by making a 100 fruit loop necklace.

I hope your child had lots to tell you about our 100th day celebration when they got home. Thank you for helping make our 100th day successful!
